Today I spoke with Minna Paussu, Finnish designer who launched her own brand Minna Paussu Design 2 years ago. How she ended up here is an inspiring story full of insights about finding your own path and allowing your creativity blossom.
Minna has her background in engineering and she did her first career in large corporations, she describes; I used to dress up in long trousers and business suits and I had periods when I only dressed in black. I did look at colorful prints and dresses, but I didn’t think it was for me.

In 2015 something changed, her long lasted corporate career had a new turn and Minna also became more socially aware as the refugee crises in Europe escalated. She suddenly saw a lot of negativity around her; personal strategies and debates in media around human rights and inequality.
I wanted to show that its possible to make your dreams come true and that its important to listen to yourself and allow yourself to be driven by things you value.
She thought that this was her time to do something, shift the way her live was going. She wanted to show with her own example that its possible to have impact. She wanted to bring joy and beauty were there was so much negativity, problems and even hate. Especially she wanted to see women being empowered to make change happen and show that is was possible to approach life through joy and hope.
Joy for Joy’s sake : it all started with a print!
It all started with a print ! She says now. I wanted colors, joy, lightness. I also wanted femininity, I wanted women to feel beautiful, confident and bold in my designs. I knew from the start that the first material needed to be silk for reaching that goal. Silk has unique lightness and freedom that you don’t get with other materials, Minna says, when she speaks proudly about her designs. Silk flatters any figure and it simply adds a degree of grace just by itself.

Since, Minna has also added wool pieces into her collection. She has grown her brand very consciously and she has been adding new designs to her line slowly and in collaboration with her customers. I love the connection I can create with my customers she says. Its very important for me that the customer get a product she can wear often, and that she is fully satisfied with her piece. I used to meet all my customers personally, now its getting a bit more difficult since I have more resellers but I hope I can maintain that connection as much as possible.
I want my customer to feel joy when wearing my designs.
Minna makes important point on how to take care of silk: silk requires care, , but when taken care of, it cleans itself, it keeps its shape day after day and your silk pieces can really last long in good shape. Silk needs airing, in other words you need to leave your pieces rest in airy place after use. While you want to wait as long as possible before washing silk, it can be washed, ideally with special product and then ironed.

As for her own journey, the career and life change has not always been easy but very rewarding. She says she has become stronger and she has learned to appreciate her personal journey, also the periods of self-doubt and research. The increased self-awareness and respect are also translating into her style. I have become more conscious about my style and how I treat myself, I am worth wearing colorful pieces and I deserve to feel good in my clothes. With my style, I am not only expressing myself, but I am also respecting the environment I’m in and the people around me.

Thank you lovely Minna for your inspiration!
